After six months in Tihar Jail, Rajya Sabha MP for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Sanjay Singh, will be freed on bail today. In the Delhi Liquor Policy case, the Supreme Court granted him bail on Tuesday, April 2. Yesterday's publication was not possible because of the judicial proceedings.
On Wednesday, Anita Singh, the spouse of Sanjay Singh, appeared at Rouse Avenue Court to finalize the bail procedure. In exchange for a surety bond and a surety payment of Rs 2 lakh, the court granted bail. The wife of Sanjay Singh signed a Rs 2 lakh bond.
Three requirements were imposed by the court on Sanjay Singh's bail. First off, he refuses to leave jail and would not comment on the excise policy matter. Will give up his passport, second. You shall notify the investigating agency and provide your current location if you leave Delhi.
The bail was not opposed by ED.
The Supreme Court questioned the ED on March 2 about whether Sanjay Singh should remain in custody for an additional few days. The court added that he spent an additional six months behind bars. Based on the discussion that occurred, no proof was discovered against Sanjay Singh.
ED needs to clarify its intentions since it could be detrimental to you (ED) if we write in such a way that no case is brought against them. The ED stated that there is no issue and that they ought to be released on bond.
What accusation is made against Sanjay Singh?
Sanjay Singh is mentioned as accepting a Rs 82 lakh contribution in the ED charge sheet. In relation to this, on October 4, ED arrived at his residence and, following a ten-hour interview, took him into custody. On May 2, ED released its second supplemental charge sheet in the Delhi Liquor Policy case, whereby AAP MP Raghav Chaddha's name was also mentioned. He was not, however, accused.
What was said by Radhika Singh, Sanjay Singh's mother, during his bail?
Radhika Singh, Sanjay Singh's mother, stated that she met her son early on March 2 but was unaware of the bail. God paid attention to what we said. We've cried a lot, so don't ask about the day our son died before us. God will occasionally hear from an honest person.
"Our son was caught just like that without any evidence," stated Radhika Singh. He gets a stomachache and is sick. Despite being a good kid, our son needed bail. He was hauled away by force, even though he wasn't meant to go to jail. He will give Sanjay a hearty greeting when he gets home.
The account of the detention of three prominent AAP leaders from the time the liquor policy was introduced until it was revoked...
A new alcohol policy went into force in November 2021.
On March 22, 2021, Delhi's Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia declared the new alcohol policy. According to him, the liquor stores will become privately owned under this approach. Sisodia gave two reasons in response to a question about the rationale behind the new policy. The Mafia will no longer govern. Second, the government's cash reserve will rise.
On November 17, 2021, the new liquor policy 2021–22 went into effect. As a result, the government exited the booze industry, and private companies took over. Due to numerous large discounts, there was a massive booze sale. The government's treasury was boosted as a result; however, this new approach was met with resistance.
July 2022: Rumors of a liquor policy scam.
Chief Secretary of Delhi Naresh Kumar claimed on July 8, 2022, that the new liquor regulation is a swindle. He sent a report to LG VK Saxena about this. Reportedly, Sisodia provided unauthorized advantages to authorized liquor vendors. However, LG has also stated that the cabinet's and his approval were not sought when amendments were made to the liquor regulation.
CBI and ED register a case in August 2022.
LG Saxena, citing the Chief Secretary's report, requests a CBI investigation. On August 17, 2022, the investigative agency filed a case report. Manish Sisodia, two companies, nine businessmen, and three retired government executives were accused in this. A case was filed under the corruption-related sections against each and every one of them.
On August 19, raids were carried out at 31 sites across seven states, which included Sisodia's residence and workplace. Sisodia asserted that the CBI found nothing in relation to this. On August 22, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a money laundering complaint after receiving information about the matter from the CBI.
The government abandoned the new strategy in July 2022.
The Delhi administration revoked the new liquor legislation on July 28, 2022, in response to the growing criticism. The decision was made to revert to the previous policy. In a cabinet note dated July 31, the government stated that although liquor sales were strong, wholesale and retail traders were pulling out of the liquor market, which resulted in a decline in government earnings.
The CBI detained Sisodia on February 26, 2023.
Sisodia was supposedly labeled the primary accuser in the scandal because he oversaw the excise agency. On February 26, the investigative agency arrested him following many interrogations. Right now, he's incarcerated. As the Excise Minister, Sisodia was charged by the CBI with acting arbitrarily and unilaterally, which hurt the exchequer and helped the liquor industry.
ED detains Sanjay Singh on October 4, 2023.
The name of Sanjay Singh was mentioned in the ED charge sheet related to the purported alcohol fraud. In 2022, this chargesheet was submitted. After accused-turned-witness Dinesh Arora's confession in the alleged liquor fraud case, Sanjay Singh was reportedly arrested.
Dinesh Arora is a well-known restaurant entrepreneur in Delhi. In addition, he belongs to the Indian National Restaurant Association. According to reports, Dinesh Arora admitted to the Enforcement Department that he handed Manish Sisodio Rs 82 lakh, which was utilized in the Delhi Assembly elections, at Sanjay Singh's request.
The Delhi liquor fraud led to the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on March 21 by the Enforcement Department. Kejriwal received nine summonses from the ED. He didn't show up for even one summoning. Kejriwal and ED had both arrived at the court with the summons during this time.
On March 17, the ED issued Kejriwal the ninth summons. On March 19, Kejriwal appeared in the High Court in opposition to the summons. On March 20, his petition was considered. ED was called by the court for continuous summons.
Kejriwal had asked the court to guarantee that he wouldn't be detained if he went to the ED to be questioned. There is no stay on Kejriwal's arrest, as the judge made clear; he must appear before the ED. Following the court's ruling, the ED went to Kejriwal's residence that evening and, after roughly two hours of questioning, took him into custody that night.
