IPL 2024 Series, Part 2: Ten cricket leagues combined are four times behind this; the earnings from a single IPL match are equivalent to the entire Pakistani league.
In two days, the 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will begin. This two-month tournament will yield bumper earnings for BCCI. In terms of revenue, the other nine international cricket leagues are nearly four times less than the Indian Premier League.
In a single season, Pakistan's franchise cricket league PSL generates the same revenue from broadcasting rights as the Indian Premier League does from a single match. The Indian Premier League is by far the greatest cricket league in the world, with a projected brand value of Rs 88 thousand crore in 2023.
Tell us the math behind the IPL's revenue in relation to other cricket leagues in Part 2 of the series.
The value of the IPL exceeds the sum of the remaining ten leagues by a factor of 4.4.
The total brand value of the top ten cricket leagues in the world after the Indian Premier League is approximately Rs 20,000 crores. In comparison to all of these, the Indian Premier League (IPL) alone has a brand value of Rs 88,000 crore, as per a report by Brand Finance, a consultancy that assesses global brands. In terms of brand value, the IPL has a 340% advantage over the top ten leagues in the world combined.
The cricket league's second-place brand is England's 'The Hundred' competition. The Pakistan Super League (PSL), with a brand value of Rs 2,486 crore, is ranked number five. The Women's Premier League (WPL) in India is ranked just below with a brand value of Rs 2,246 crore.
The worth of a league's whole ecosystem is its brand value. A tournament's title rights, income, stadium attendance, sponsors, TV and internet viewers, player and team prices, and advertising all contribute to its brand value.
In 2023, the IPL brand is expected to be worth $ 10.7 billion, or roughly Rs 88,700 crore. This implies that someone must pay the BCCI Rs 88,700 crore in order to own an IPL team.
By selling the digital and TV rights to one IPL match in 2023—equivalent to a full PSL season—BCCI raised Rs 48,391 crore. The broadcasters paid Rs 9,678 crore for one season, or five years' worth of matches. This claims that BCCI receives Rs 119 crore for each match that is shown.
For a single PSL season, broadcasters give the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Rs 124 crore. That represents Rs 3.60 crore from a single game. Two and a half times more money is made by BCCI from the Women's Premier League (WPL) than from the PSL when even a single match is televised.
In terms of broadcasting rights, the Big Bash League (BBL) of Australia is ranked second. For a match played here, Cricket Australia (CA) receives Rs 14.50 crore. In this regard, The Hundred League is ranked fourth, and WPL is ranked third.
The price of the second-most expensive player in the premier cricket league is the same as the average salary of IPL players, which is Rs 4 crore. An IPL team can only assemble a squad of 25 players for a maximum of Rs 100 crore. The tournament involves 10 teams, meaning that 250 players will receive salaries totaling one million crore rupees.
In terms of player salaries, the BBL comes in second place with eight teams spending a total of Rs 128 crore. The SA20 league in South Africa has the second-highest average salary. 108 players make an average of about Rs 1 crore a year. PSL players make an average of Rs 50 lakh a year.
The players' earnings records in the cricket league were shattered during the most recent IPL auction. Mitchell Starc, an Australian fast bowler, cost a record Rs 24.75 crore when he was acquired by Kolkata Knight Riders. which is Rs 20.61 crore more than the most expensive player in the UAE League ILT20, David Warner, who costs Rs 4.14 crore.
In the SA20 league in South Africa, Tristan Stubbs is the most expensive player. He was purchased by the Sunrisers team for Rs 4.10 crore. Other than this, the most expensive player in the remaining leagues costs less than Rs 3.50 crore, which is not even close to the average IPL salary of Rs 4 crore.
At a combined cost of Rs 1.40 crore, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Babar Azam are the most expensive players in the PSL. which is Rs 2 crore less than Smriti Mandhana, the most expensive player in the WPL. The cost of Mandhana is Rs 3.40 crore.
